Abstract

Indonesia is a developing country with a rich history in its civilization. These historical traces leave physical remains in the form of historical buildings that are an important part of the nation's cultural heritage. Preservation of historical buildings is necessary to maintain their existence and historical value so that they can be passed on to future generations as physical evidence of the nation's historical journey. However, there are still many historical buildings that have not been documented in a measurable and systematic manner, one of which is Soekarno's Exile House located in Berastagi District. This research is qualitative research with a case study strategy that examines an object in depth. The approach used is the descriptive-survey method. Data collection is carried out by identifying and mapping the architectural characteristics of documentation using the Historic Buildings Survey (HABS) method, which includes direct measurements, recording architectural elements and compiling technical drawings. The results of the study indicate that the characteristics of historical preservation can be seen from the similarity of its function, the basic form of the building, materials, style and spatial layout that still relatively follow the initial configuration of the exile period. Soekarno's Exile House in Berastagi District has a high historical value as the location of Soekarno's exile during the Second Military Aggression by the Dutch on December 19, 1948 and has now been designated as a Provincial cultural heritage in 2023. However, public awareness is still lacking in preserving historical buildings so that sustainable and collaborative preservation efforts are needed between academics, architects, and local communities, to ensure that conservation strategies are not only technical but also rooted in the socio-cultural context. This documentation is expected to be a non-physical preservation effort as well as a source of knowledge of historical architecture in Indonesia.
